When your son or daughter turns (or turned) 18 years old, something happens. They automatically are viewed as adults by almost every legal standard available in Georgia. One huge legal standard you, Mom, need to be aware of is the standard of health care privacy. In short, health care privacy means that no one (and I mean no one) gets to access information relating to your health care needs, treatment, status, finances, etc. Even if you are footing the bill for insurance or agree to be legally responsible for the medical expenses. That includes you, Mom. This isn't a fear mongering story. This is me, as a mom of a 17 year old daughter about to head off to college this Fall, tell you, mom of a young adult also, that you need to consider having your son or daughter sign an age appropriate health care power of attorney allowing you to help them if they need it.
